Cause and Consequence
Peer-led research using creative research methods to identify and call for changes to systems and services linked to mental ill-health and homelessness.
The Mental Health Action Group (MHAG) is part of Manchester’s Homelessness Partnership; this research was initiated by MHAG based on listening to the lived experiences of group members. The research itself was funded by Shelter through Inspiring Change Manchester to identify the changes which need to happen in systems and services linked to mental ill-health and homelessness.
Creative research methods
We used a story tree to create a simple visual narrative framework for participants to share their ideas about what works, what needs to change, words of wisdom and priorities.
Different members of MHAG took part at different stages – and so multi-layered peer activities were identified to ensure the direction of the research and recommendations were authentically co-produced, whilst mindful of research ethical considerations.
Impact
Cause and Consequence had a lasting impact beyond the launch itself: attendees continued to wear their t-shirts months later illustrating their support, and professionals still refer to the report as a valuable resource for organisational and team evolution.
We have also seen actionable changes directly due to the high profile C&C co-produced research, including the creation of a Mental Health and Homelessness Ops Group, running as a cross sector community of practice.
Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust took on all of the recommendations of the research and allocated additional resources, e.g. the introduction of PIE in the city. Just as important, voluntary sector organisation reported the approach changed the way they undertake participation and involvement with people accessing their services.
