GM Transformation Lab
Working with change-makers in Greater Manchester using MIT’s U-Lab process, there were plenty of insights regarding the complexities of change-making at individual and organisational level.
Artwork was woven throughout each series as a means to trigger, support or record layers of discussion. Read more here: https://gmulab.wordpress.com

Beginning to re-imagine: Drawn using ink and watercolour pencil, this image represents a sense of ‘beginning’, much like the hero journey we stand at a cross roads, strong foundations reassure us (tree roots symbolic of the connections with nature which emerged), and though this can be an uncomfortable time, there is a sense of readiness to face the uncertainties we hold. There may be questions which need answering, but with a deep breath, the holding of the wisdom, support and guidance (lantern) of our networks (stars) helps our tentative steps into the unknown.

Time for Change: This ink and watercolour pencil piece takes a pause to reimagine our future landscape and envisioning supportive, connected spaces. It is time to move away from the old normal, as illustrated through the dropped cog (by supporting one another we are ready to face the new) and the inverted clock hand. In the re-imagined world there are close connections to one another (we truly listen and support) and to nature. By playing with perspective the dominance of humans within the world shifts and by reframing our relationship with the natural environment, we all benefit. From a broader perspective, the time piece is evocative of the Earth, and the central structural changes which we want to see emerge, creating a framework which is respectful, empathetic and hopeful.

Community beehive: Bringing together different voices to make change. There is a sense of hope that together we can make change happen – a real sense of togetherness is vital as change-making can often be isolating. This community recognises the value of individuality whilst looking to create a safe space to listen, learn, question, support and grow. Here within the community beehive there are concerns, ideas, inspirations for change.

Perhaps: This ink and watercolour pencil image symbolises the sense of potential which emerged during the session… the notion of self and others being caught within a particular context and our imaginings. Here we attempt to escape the barriers which technology can bring, and sharks of disconnection and distance (in body and mind) and dismissal (of change and other perspectives), whilst also finding reassurance in holding onto them. There’s a wealth of information and a variety of perspectives waiting to be explored to inform our change-making, but unless we can process (the mangle) that insight into something we can digest, our ability to truly be present in our listening, embracing the diversity and equality which comes with change (coin), remains illusive. As an aside… the coin here is both a manifestation of potential, whilst through its monetary value, also recognising that we need to have a personal investment into transformation.
